Accounts by German prisoners of war at Camp Spiegel describing the voyage of SMS EMDEN
Abstract
Extracts of interviews with German prisoners of war at Camp Spiegel, Liverpool, NSW relating to the voyage of the EMDEN from 27 July to 9 November 1914, including descriptions of SMS EMDEN’s battle with HMAS SYDNEY. The accounts are written in an Australian school text book. They relate a German sailors’ perspective of events concerning EMDEN from just before the outbreak of war on July 27th 1914 to the Battle of Cocos on 9 November. The account of the battle begins with; ‘9 November – The sun rose blood red, EMDEN’s fate symbolised’. Part of a collection of material relating to the German WWI raider SMS EMDEN and crew members who were taken prisoner and interned at Liverpool, NSW, during the war.
