Description From Source“This is an extraordinary account of a Sicilian Benedictine priest who was sent to Australia in 1851 to minister to transported convicts. Throughout his stay in Australia, Father Emanuele kept a rigorous diary written in English. So far however, only his opinions on the erroneous nature of restarting English transportion of convicts to Australia has been translated into Italian by a descendant of the Emanuele family and included in this publication. What becomes obvious to the reader is Father Emanuele’s social conscience, stating the best factor for convicts was not punishment but rehabilitation. Reproduced in the book are a few of Father Emanuele’s hand-written pages. This publication is held in the IHS Collection at the CO.AS. IT. Resource Centre.
