Description From Source0.16 metres of textual records (1 box) This collection of 5 scrapbooks contains press clippings and related publications and covers Yvonne Preston’s work as the Sydney Morning Herald’s foreign correspondent in China between 1975-1978 and the National Times’ foreign editor in 1980. Preston was there during a significant period in China’s history and international relations, with the ending of the Cultural Revolution and death of Mao Zedong on 9 September 1976; the devastating Tangshan earthquake, developments in China-Australian relations with an official visit by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser in 1976, and Deng Xiaoping brought back from exile becoming leader in 1978. The collection mainly comprises clippings of articles by Preston but there are some related publications, including Chinese language newspapers.
